So, make sure to pay attention to customer requirements and handle them efficiently. Be ready to render any sort of help related to delivery or exchange. Also check whether your sales people are handling the customers properly or not.

Control inventory: It is better idea to go with one particular clothing retail trend as a wide range of trend can create confusion. For instance, if your retail store business specializes in budget clothes then there is no point in selling very expensive outfits. In fact, try to keep your merchandise within any of the three prices lines such as budget, off-price and moderate. Also to maintain your inventory level, keep a track of what's selling and what's not selling so that next time you purchase the right clothing items.

Customer feedback: The success of any clothing retail business largely depends on the collection of the merchandise. Always look towards your customer suggestions as they are the ultimate one who would be using the products. Ask for the feedback of your regular customers and if they are suggesting something listen to it.

Right marketing strategy: No business can be popular without proper marketing. There are many cost-effective marketing strategies to create the buzz about your retail store business amongst your targeted customers. Clothing Line Business Plan Template

This article is meant to be a very rough outline in the process of starting up an e-commerce based clothin 00004000 g store or boutique. In the high-paced and competitive world of fashion retail setting up your store is just the first step and quite honestly has little bearing on how successful your store will actually be. For example, Bluefly.com has an estimated monthly traffic of 840K, but since going public in 1998 has never made a single year of profit. As of December 31, 2009, Bluefly has an accumulated deficit of $147,468,000. Your guess on how they remain in business is as good as mine, but think of it this way. Even if you only make $1.00 of profit your first year of business, then you are technically doing better than Bluefly.

Please note, many of these steps can be done concurrently. For example, while you are filing your legal forms, you can work on your web design. This is especially true if you are depending on a third-party to design and set-up your website. They may work on a longer time frame than you initially anticipated. I do highly suggest that you just focus on the business plan initially. For example, if you decide that you are going to design your website with a specific concept while you write your business plan, then you just might find after researching that your concept is not what you're going to move forward with. In this case, you probably spent 40-60 hours on non-productive output.

1. Write a business plan.To be honest with you, when my girlfriend and I launched our website, we did not have a business plan, but we did write one eventually. The simple fact is that if you are planning for success, then you must write a business plan sooner or later. In business school, you write it sooner than later. The business plan is important because it forces you to do research about the industry, your competitors, and your resources. Additionally, it forces you to think deeply about how you are going to succeed in this highly competitive industry. If you think that you are going to be just like Modcloth, then why would you expect to be successful compared to Modcloth when they are working with millions of dollars of venture capitalist funds for a workforce, marketing, inventory, etc. I don't have an answer for you, but my point is that you have to come up with a plan before investing your life's savings into this new venture. Also, the business plan is important because it also forces you to estimate how much money you will need and where that many is coming from. The reality is that unless you have real background in finance, you will not be able to build a 5-10 year projected Discounted Cash Flow Model and figure out your WACC, but having some kind of rough idea of your cash flow is better than nothing.

You should also include a plan on how you are going to initially set-up your website. For example, using a subscription-based shopping cart will change your budget than if you decide to use an open-source shopping cart. Also, you should also do your initial research on web hosting companies since they can range from $10/month to over $300/month. My only suggestion is that you get the fastest and most reliable that your budget will allow. Please note, that all I'm suggesting is that you plan what you are going to do as far as web design and hosting is concerned, not that you go out and pay for these services right now. The only expense that you may want to consider at this moment is that for registering a domain name. That's because they are relatively inexpensive to register and you don't want to possibly miss out on registering your wanted domain.

You should come up with a budget and plan for marketing, public relations, and search engine optimization. These will most likely be your largest expense heading into the future. Remember, buying inventory is not an expense, it is an asset.
Last, but not least, you also want to plan on order fulfillment. This is just a fancy way of saying how you are going to pack and send your product, as well as what return procedure and policy you will have in place. Will you use USPS, UPS, FedEx, or DHL? Will you have free shipping, returns, and/or exchanges? These are all things that should be planned for, though will change over time.

2. Apply for a Employer Identification Number with the IRSOnce again, if you are planning for success in the future, then you are going to have to run your business legally. You will need an EIN to open a bank account, apply for a business license, and get a seller's permit. Just search "EIN" in the google search engine and the IRS website should be the first result. When applying for your EIN, you will need to know the legal structure of your business. For example, if your business is going to be a one man or woman show, then you are going to apply as a sole proprietor. If it turns out that you and your mom are going to run the business, then you may choose partnership or decide to incorporate.

3. Pick your fictitious business name, "Doing Business As," and file it with your county clerkOne of the more exciting step in setting up your business will always be picking a name. My girlfriend and chose T.I.L. Darling because before we were officially a couple, she would tell me that in Thailand, her home country, that she and I could never go out alone as even friends. I told her, "This is London, Darling." So, I guess our business name should technically be T.I.L., Darling, to be more grammatically correct. Once you have your fictitious business name, you need to make a pretty good attempt to make sure no one else is using that same name. Otherwise, years down the line when you are making money, you can expect a letter from a lawyer saying how they are going to sue the designer pants off of you.

If your county registrar/clerk has a website with downloadable forms, then search for the DBA filing form, fill it out, and bring it to the county clerk. Otherwise, you will just have to do everything in person. There, you will probably have your first business expense with the filing fee. Your second expense will be the requirement that you advertise your new business name in an approved newspaper or public publication so that if anyone has a problem with your DBA then they can step forward. The county clerk will be able to point you in the right direction for this step.

4. Open a business bank accountAgain, planning for future success, you will want to open up a separate bank account for your business. This way, you can track and easily separate business expenses from your personal expenses, write checks or have transactions under your business name, and just generally feel like a real business.

5. Start designing and setting up your websiteThere are actually a few methods of going forward with your website. I will explore a few options starting from the most costly to the least costly. Even though I would have to question whether or not running an online business if for you, but if you have extremely limited experience with web design or are just not internet savvy, then you may need to do everything third-party. If you realize that you're going to need someone to design your website, initially set-up your domain and site, then you will probably need to find some kind of subscription based shopping cart. For example, if you have money to spend, then search "boutiquecommerce" in the google search engine. This company will do just about everything for you, from web design, domain registration, web hosting, to ongoing support. There are many third-party shopping carts fitting almost any budget. To be honest, I have no experience with any paid or subscription based shopping cart and so I will limit any opinion I have on them.

Another alternative is to buy a website template designed on top of an open-source (free) shopping-cart platform. Search "templatemonster" in the google search engine. Filter your search to include E-Commerce templates and choose "fashion" as your category, though you can customize any template to your needs in reality.

On a side note, before you purchase your template, you should set-up your server. During your business plan research, you should have figured out what web host fits best for you, but now is the time to actually spend some money because you will not be able to test your template unless you have a server to upload it to. This also means that if you haven't done so already, then you will have to finally register your domain name, which is something you should have also figured out in your business plan. Most web hosts will actually register your domain for free, but feel free to use a service, such as godaddy, and you'll need to change the namerservers to point to your web host.

Once you have your template and web host, then you need to upload your template and start customizing it. You can either use a "template tuning" service or if you have enough html, php, and photoshop experience, then you can do it yourself. Unfortunately, this step can be pretty difficult even for somewhat internet savvy users because this is where you will need to learn a little bit about setting up a database, setting up a database user, and how to use an FTP program to upload your site. That's why some may opt to use a third-party shopping cart, but this option is by far the most flexible and cheapest if you have the time and are willing to learn.

You will also need to figure out how you will accept payment on your website. If you want to accept credit cards, which you should, then you will need a payment gateway. The most popular would be Paypal Pro and Authorize.net. You will need to apply for an account.
Of course, there is the ultimate DYI approach, where you can not only design your own website, but also code your own shopping cart. If this is the case, then I highly doubt you need to read this section of my tutorial.

6. Make Business CardsYes, I actually made this an individual step because you will need a business card to register for trade shows, as well as deal with suppliers. Since you are also working on your website design, it is also more efficient to work on a business card design. Additionally, you need some lead time because printers will charge you extra to expedite printing and shipping. So, if you plan ahead, you can save quite a bit of money.

7. Apply for a business license in your cityOnce again, if your city has website dedicated to business, then you should be able to download an application for a business license. In some cities, you can even apply for a home-based business license. Of course, only fill out a home-based business license if that is your case. Bring or even possibly mail your completed application and filing fee to the appropriate location. The reason I put this step after designing your website is because the business license fee is a yearly fee and so why pay when you are not even close to launching your website.

8. Apply for a Seller's PermitAt this point, you should be fairly proficient at filing out forms. The last application you should have to file is for your seller's permit, sometimes mistakenly called a resale license. The seller's permit will allow you to buy from your wholesalers without paying sales tax, but it also requires you to pay the sales tax on any items sold, within your state, every quarter. Of course, in modern commerce, you are allowed to collect the sales tax from your customers.

9. Figure out how you are going to display your productsBefore you actually source your products, I believe it is wise to first figure out how you are going to display your products on your website. Are you going to use a mannequin, model, or just lay it flat. Will you outsource your product photography or do it right in your bedroom, which is how we first started. If you are going to do it yourself, then you still need to make sure it fits your budget and business plan as far as purchasing equipment. If you are going to need equipment, then now is the time to either jump online or go out and start making a real investment in your business.

10. Plan your product mix and find suppliersWhile you are figuring out how you will ultimate display your products, you will want to start researching where you will buy your products. If you haven't done so, then you will want to start thinking more about your product mix. Of course, it needs to fit perfectly with your business plan, concept, and budget you already established in step 1. Fashion buying is another topic completely and I highly suggest you read up on it if you can.

After you have some kind of buying plan, it's time to find suppliers. If you are lucky, then you will be able to catch the MAGIC Marketplace trade show in Las Vegas. They have vendors for vintage inspired clothing, juniors clothing, indie clothing, etc. It is essentially the largest fashion trade show in the USA and maybe the world. If you cannot find suppliers at MAGIC, then I would honestly be surprised. If you cannot wait for the bi-annual trade show, then you are most likely going to need to take a trip to the Los Angeles Fashion District. If you are looking for the glamorous world of designer labels, then you will be spending your time at "The Intersection." At this intersection you will find the California Market Center, Cooper Design Space, Gerry Building, and The New Mart. Here you can find brands such as A.B.S. By Allen Schwartz, BCBG, and Betsey Johnson. If you are in this market, then be sure to bring copies of your business license, business card, and seller's license. Also, as an online business, be prepared to be rejected by many showrooms. If you're like me though, then it should only inspire you to be more successful so that when the time comes you can reject them.

If your price point is a lot lower, then you are going to really want to spend time around the San Pedro Mart area. You will probably find that 80-90% of these wholesalers are not right for your target market, but that only means that you should find 10%-20% that is right and will be able to focus on building those relationships into the future.

Of course, you can always turn to the internet, registering with sites like fashiongo and lashowroom. Additionally, you can contact individual brand sales reps and they should send you line sheets and look books. In fact, this is how most business will be later in the future, but I suggest you visit trade shows and marts to get your feet a little wet.

11. Start product photography and adding content to your websiteSince you should have planned earlier for product photography, this step should be self explanatory. You want to add the products to your website and get it ready for a more official launch.

12. Start your marketing campaign, Search Engine Optimization campaign, and PR campaignAgain, these campaigns should have already been planned in the first step. This step is pretty much a hundred different subjects on its own and so I will not really dive to deep into it. The most rudimentary start would be to submit your site to search engines, such as Google and Yahoo!, sign up for Google Adwords, and start a Facebook and Twitter account. There is probably a good chance that will have to depend on paid advertising to get decent traffic at the beginning, but I highly suggest you plan and budget appropriately.
It might t 00004000 ake one day or a whole month, but you're going to get your first order and at that point you can finally say you really set-up your online clothing store.

Like I said, setting up an online clothing store is just the first step. In reality, you are going to have to learn as much as you can about fashion buying, merchandising, marketing, search engine optimization, html, php, ajax, javascript, analytics, etc.

Retail Clothing Business Plan

Opening up a Clothing store has become a huge trend in the world of business. Entrepreneurs, and the entrepreneur wannabes, have chosen this line of business thinking that starting and maintaining a clothing store is a lot easier than starting and maintaining a food service business or a purified water distributor. But that's where they are wrong. This particular industry may be easy to start, but it's a lot harder to maintain than other business.

The industry of clothing is a very competitive world. Almost 80% of retail clothing business fails within the first five years of their businesses. This is primarily because of the owner's lack of preparation, experience, poor management, lack of competitiveness, and a poor knowledge of what's hot and what's not in the world of fashion clothing.

Setting up a retail clothing business is much like any other businesses, it must undergo extensive planning, preparation, and self motivation for the business to grow in success. And this is where most of the entrepreneur and entrepreneur wannabes miss out, which is why failures and bankruptcy is very common in this line of business.

So before starting a retail clothing business such as a clothing store or boutique, you must first plan ahead and get all the necessary things in place before investing half or the whole of your life savings in it. Here are some steps and tips on how to properly start your retail clothing business.

Step 1: Test Your Own Capacity

When I said aCapacitya, I mean is your own ability and skills to handle a business, in which case, retail clothing business.

Now in this line of business Experience can come a very long way. Experience is the baseline for all business starters; it would be a huge waste of money if you're going to start a business with nothing but your ambition for grandeur. Keeping a positive mindset is very helpful yes, but it won't get you that far if all that's all you know. Many of the entrepreneurs I met had failed in their attempts in a retail clothing business because they lack one of the key roles in a business, experience.

Experience plays a vital role in this line of business or any kind of business. Experiences can come from anything from merely lending a hand on a friend's or family's business, or from special merchandizing courses that you attended. Whatever it may be, experience in handling any business is very important in starting another.

TIP: If you don't have the experience that you need, then why not try your hands on having a part time job on local clothing store or take lessons on merchandizing. This way, you could learn how to handle a business, while having hands-on experience on the real deal.

Now in any kind of businesses, Risks are a very common thing. Some risks are small enough for you to even notice it, but some are huge, so big that if you fail, you're likely to loose all your life's saving. Now I'm not trying to push you away or anything, it's just that risks are always there. Starting any kind of business always entails risks.

TIP: It all depends on the mindset; if your mind is set to recognize risks as a challenge then you'll likely to enjoy taking a lot of risks in your business. Risks aarea a way for business to grow in success if taken strategically and properly.

In taking any businesses, we must always have Faith in ourselves and in the industry we took upon. You must get things straight here. Do you really prefer a business of selling clothes rather than a business that involves food or water? Passion is one of the most important trait that a business man or woman should possess when handling any kind of business. It has to be enough to get you through the yearly holiday rushes as well as the slow summer lulls. If not, then you'll likely to loose your courage to continue on.

TIP: Remember, taking on a business is like getting married, afor better or for worsta. So before you take on this business, then make sure that you're committed in this line of business so as to avoid unnecessary bankruptcy.

Being a Specialist in this line of business can make or break the possibility of gaining success in a retail clothing business. For you to handle and maintain your business with ease, it's very important to know the industry for which you have taken upon. Having knowledge of what's hot or what's not, knowing what's happening behind the stage curtains, and having a keen sense of what will be the next big thing is what making money in this industry. So it's very important that you have the necessary knowledge in what you sell and what you're about to sell to your customers.

TIP: You really don't have to become a specialist just to start a retail clothing business. All you need to do is to do some research about what's happening in the word of fashion clothing. Ask around, you'll be surprised on the amount of knowledge that these urban people have about clothes.

Step 2: Choose Your Specialty

Now some of you might think that starting up a clothing store simply means selling clothes. Now that's where you're wrong. In this industry, it's important for you to choose your niche or your specialty.

Before you open your own fashion clothing store or fashion boutique, you may want to think about what athemea or specialization of clothes you may want to sell. There are a lot, a few examples include: bridal or wedding boutique, business clothing boutique, casual wear / rough gear / street clothes, children's wear boutique, couture, formal wear boutique, lingerie, maternity store, men's wear boutique, special size boutiques (petites, plus size, tall, etc.,) sports wear / active wear, teen gear, women's wear boutique, etc.

Just choose where you want to specialize on. If your business grows, you could turn your niche into a whole-rounder, providing not just one type of clothing but a multiple one. But until then, you should concentrate on your niche and make it grow.

Step 3: Location

Location in this line of business is very important. Aside from experience in handling a business and knowledge about your line of business, location is the third most important part of a retail clothing business. Now why is the location of your shop very important? Well let's say that your clothing store can provide the widest variety of clothes, and that you give monster discounts on all your stocks, but the problem about your shop is that customers would have to travel a mile before getting to your shop. Now that's what I'm talking about, why would the customers bother to travel a mile just to get to your shop if there's one just a kilometer away from them?

When choosing a location for your store, do your research. Check population statistics, demographics, neighborhood characteristics, traffic counts and area development plans, or seek advice from senior retailers. Here are some simple tips on how to locate a perfect location.

Find out where your target market or your customers live and shops.

Find out where your competition is (too many stores can lead to price-cutting, lower profits and difficulty in building customer loyalty).

Create a distinct image. Make your shop unique from others.

Make sure that people can see your store from many angles and that they can reach you by public transportation or park nearby.

Think of a location which your target customer already frequents instead of opening a destination store. Taking a high street shop is a good idea if you are planning to sell bridal or party wear, while a shop selling mid range casuals can be located in a normal multi store mall.

Step 4: Supplier

Now once you've decided the location and your specialty, then its time for you to think about your list of suppliers who will be supplying you with all your products. Do your research well when deciding on suppliers; because the lower the costs that these people give you, the higher will be the profits that you will be able to make.

TIP: If you're having hard time finding the right supplier for you, then the internet can provide you with some suppliers you want. A perfect example is with the Seven Wholesale. It is also an online wholesale clothing shop that provides a wide array of clothing stocks that can cater to any niche of your choice.

Step 5: Get Known

If you want your market to know that you're there, then its time to advertise. Before embarking on your retail clothing business, it's important to plan out how your target market will know that you exist.

Advertising is one form. It aims to inform, create interest and establish customer confidence. It's important that you provide the necessary funding for this marketing strategy.

Once you know your budget and target market, figure out the number and type of ads you need. Product ads focus on merchandise; institutional ads focus on your services and store image. There are many ways for your shop to get known. Among those are:

  • Direct mail, to send personalized information to those on a mailing list.
  • Newspapers, especially local papers, particularly for promoting special events.
  • Radio, to reach certain markets, such as country stations for western wear.
  • And the internet.

Now all the information you have read are just a few points about how to start a clothing store. While these are necessary basics that you need to consider, the list is by no means complete. So it's up to you to decide the rest. This will allow you to learn more about yourself and your capability to run a business such as a clothing store business.

Energy Drink Business Plan

Are Energy Drinks Growing at the same rate as they did 5 year 00004000 s ago or 3 years ago? No, they are not. They are still growing fantastically but not as much as they did back then. The stakes are now high, more companies are acquired, and more entrepreneurs are getting the funding and then the big pay day of an acquisition. So sales are vicious at the convenience store level. More Energy Drinks are competing for the same space on the shelve or refrigerator, and the big boys like Coca Cola, Pepsi, Rockstar, Monster and Redbul are fighting back and getting for shelf space of their own.

Of the 500 contacts I get every single month most of them are from people wanting to start an energy drink. I get calls from distributors looking for them from manufacturers trying to sell them and from entrepreneurs looking to start their own brand.

All the suppliers are tired of people calling them all the time and not doing anything so now they charge to talk; they require higher production minimums and sometimes even a retainer to get started. Production prices are a bit higher now and distributors; well they are saturated with calls from people trying to sell them energy drinks.

What can you do to compete? Learn everything you need to know to get more beverage turns? Easy, the answer is support. If you have better support you'll have more sales.
So what kind of support do you need to get the best distributors and the best retailers to carry your product? You need two basic things, you need Bodies and you need Deals.

Your Bodies are people on the ground, opening accounts for your distributors and helping retailers sell products. Your bodies will visit accounts, open accounts, merchandise, place racks, point of sale material and sell. Your deals are what you give your retailers on the spot for taking your product. It can be a special price, it can be a refrigerator, sampling event, something. Just remember this, nobody cars if you have the best looking best tasting product. They care how much you'll sell for them.

The Energy Drink Business is still a great business to get into; more than 300 new Energy Drinks hit the US market last year. If you plan on going into this business do your research first. Focus your research on sales, marketing and distribution. Yes, positioning is a lot of fun, promotion and formulation are fun also, but getting money in the bank from sales is even more fun. You are not getting any money unless you make a lot of calls and sell a lot of product. Always spend your time on landing more distributors adn retailer.

Promotions are a large part of Energy Drinks and it makes them very exciting. You have parties, club events, games, sponsorships, fun, fun and more fun. Now, the real question here is How much will you get for your promotions? Notice I don't ask how much you'll spend in promotions but how much you'll get back. Please, please don't spend a dime without a plan to get it back in sales.

Once everyone in your town finds out you have an Energy Drink you'll be the most popular game in town. You'll get calls from newspapers, magazines, and especially radio stations, all looking for advertising. Not to mention all the requests for sponsorship you'll get. What to do? In a best case scenario you will know exaccly how much you should make before you spend a dime in advertising and marketing. Don't spend anything without distribution; please save your money until you know yourROI on the cash you will invest.

Stay away from spending money in marketing and advertising until you have your distribution. You always have to remember that you do not spend marketing money without having retail placement in place. You do promotion to get the product on the shelves or because you already have product on the shelves. Use promotions as "The Deal"; giving sampling or other events to your distributors or retailers when they buy into your drink.

Business Plan Beauty Salon

A brand is the holy grail of small businesses: something many strive for, but few truly achieve. Small businesses often find themselves competing on price or location rather than creating a brand which stands on its own and sets their business apart. For your beauty salon, consider the following to create a brand.

Brand Is Not Just a Logo

A brand does not begin and end with a logo and specific font for your company name. Your salon's brand is the overall perception of what the company is and stands for, created in part by you and in part by your customers. The company logo may be a way to spot the business on a sign or product, but it is only meaningful if it is clear to customers what the salon means behind the graphic.
Brand Is Everything...

Your brand must stem from everything you say and do. All marketing, products, and services must be in agreement to create a clear brand for customers. If marketing describes the company as a salon using organic products, but customers watch staff use inorganic chemicals for their beauty treatments, the marketing can backfire. It is often better to make no claims about what your company is than to make faulty claims. This is a quick way to lose the trust of customers.

Brand cannot be enforced on customers. Although marketing may tell customers what the company stands for, it will be up to the customers to decide if those statements hold true after visiting the salon and using its products and services. For example, a beauty salon could organize its marketing around the idea that their beauty treatments put the customer in control of the service process. When staff work with customers, they must see this carried out in order to trust the salon's brand. Remember that branding can only be created when the company and customers agree what the busines is all about.

Strategic Business Plan Outline

Copyright (c) 2008 Gayla Hodges

In the first part of this article, I outlined the first four essential steps in strategic plan implementation. Part two begins with the fifth step.

The fifth step in successfully implementing your strategic plan is to keep the plan extremely visible in all levels of the organization. This is part of the communication plan. It is also part of the implementation piece: What does this look like? If the company has a strategic initiative for people development, what does that look like? Is it necessary to put together a team to define what that looks like?

Every corporate communication vehicle ' newsletters, department updates, etc ' should be tracking the progress of the strategic teams to know and report where we are in this process. Progress reports should be regular and comprehensive. Expectations also must be clearly and consistently communicated. Is the strategic goal to achieve the stated results over a five year period, or is the goal to be achieved within one year? It is critically important that everyone within the organization knows exactly what the goals are and what progress is being made toward achievement of the goals.

Teams also need to know what is being done by other teams. Very often an individual or a team will go away to start working on some kind of strategic initiative, but they do not let other teams or individuals know what is happening. In this situation, some of the impact of the strategic plan is being lost because people do not get to see it in action. Just as it is important to have the greatest possible employee involvement in the planning and writing process, it is critical to ensure the greatest possible employee involvement in implementing every part of the plan.

The implementation process is a critical time for people to become involved. If you are familiar with the Change Agents, Inc. change model, you know that setting the strategic goal is the first step in making change. The second step is involvement. So, once again, if it is your company's strategic plan, you need to involve people in its implementation. If you try to do it yourself, you will fail. The same is true of personal strategic plans. If you try to do it all yourself, you will likely fail. It is hard to keep the momentum going.

The sixth step in successful strategic plan implementation is to win buy-in. As you communicate the details and the intention of the plan and get people involved, you are actually trying to get people sufficiently involved that they understand where you are going, what you are trying to accomplish, and how you plan to reach the stated goals. It is important to have buy-in from the people you need to help you achieve your goals. The need for buy-in is equally important in implementing a personal strategic plan and in implementing a corporate strategic plan. Whether you need the support of your family or of every employee of the company, the key to success is buy-in.
Buy-in is the recognition that your plan makes sense, your strategies make sense, and that I have an important role to play in your success. Buy-in is the recognition, "This is the way we probably should be moving, and this is probably what will help us get to where we really want to go as a company or as a family."

The seventh step in successfully implementing your plan is to facilitate ownership and accountability for implementation of the strategic plan. As soon as people begin to buy in, they start looking for ways to become involved. They will look for pieces of the strategic plan they can own. This is an important key to success in plan implementation.

One caution is important: there should be one primary owner for each strategic initiative who will follow through, keep it alive and keep things going. Enlisting and engaging others is part of their leadership role as the primary owner of the initiative. Having more than one person accountable, however, usually means you will have no one accountable for reaching that goal.

Now, if you are working with your personal strategic plan and it is in your family that buy-in is important, do not underestimate the value of buy-in from every member of the family affected by the plan. If, for example, the plan is that the kids will do the laundry when you are going to school, you must have buy-in from the kids. Everyone needs to see "What's in it for me?" Everyone needs to understand "What's in it for us to all work toward the strategic goal?"

It is only when you win buy-in and ownership that people begin to understand the value of the plan and why they are being asked to participate in achieving it. Buy-in allows the person to say, "Yes, this makes sense to me and I see my role in the big picture." It is then easier to achieve the strategic initiative goal. Perhaps the goal is to save money. My role might be to look for cost savings. Perhaps the goal is to discover more efficient ways of doing something. My role might be to be more innovative. The specific actions resulting from buy-in and ownership depend on the nature of the specific strategic goal.

As I begin to own my piece of the goal, it is no longer just the company's plan; it is no longer just mom's or dad's plan. Now it is my plan and this is my piece of it. The more specific and concise you can be about your piece of it, the faster you will begin implementing it.

The eighth step in successful implementation of your strategic plan is to create energy around the goal. In an organization, that energy can become infectious because everybody, again, is looking towards the same goal.

Now, the very basic definition of a team is a group of people who have common goals and are interdependent. In other words, they must depend on one another to meet those goals. The final objective is to have your whole organization focused towards the same goals; to have that group of people who all have a common goal, which is to achieve the strategic goals and the strategic plan. In order to succeed, they must depend upon one another to achieve the goals.

Creating an overall team situation can generate tremendous energy, and that energy creates momentum in the organization. As long as you keep the focus on the specific strategic goals, and do not become distracted by too many other things, people will begin to buy in, they will start to own their piece of the pie, and that will create energy. This energy will create the momentum you need to reach either your company goals or your personal goals. It sounds simple, and it is. It is not easy because there are many things to do and there are many things to be as a leader to live out what is in your strategic plan and to clearly communicate it throughout the organization. But this is what leaders do.

Leaders have a vision. They build a small group of people who share that vision. They have the ability to articulate that vision and to build buy-in from others. Then they implement the vision and the small group of people they have gathered can move mountains and make many, many things happen in an organization.

Here's to your success in implementing your strategic plans.

Cafe Business Plan Template

Restaurant management should run as smooth as a finely tuned wind-up clock with the notches of each gear fitting each other and turning synchronously together. When one gear slows down, the others will not turn as fast or as smooth as they were before. Eventually, the machine breaks down and needs to be fixed.

Unlike a machine, however, a restaurant business is not easily fixed when it fails. To avoid this scenario from happening, do not just rely on your restaurant management skills. Seek the help of experts to guide you in areas where your business mentors did not teach you about. Experience, after all, is the best kind of education.

Websites, such as Score.org, Restaurant.org and CalRest.org, provide updated news and articles related to restaurant management. They provide short-term courses in food handling and protection, employee management, customer service, and general management matters, like legal processes involved in opening your own restaurant business. They also keep their members updated with industry-related news and special networking events for restaurant owners.

Aside from the availability of assistance from experts and fellow entrepreneurs, restaurateurs can also take advantage of free online resources, such as restaurant forms (i.e. kitchen prep sheets, inventory schedules and order forms), restaurant templates (i.e. business planning, sales and financial templates). All these restaurant forms, templates and schedules follow industry standards.

If you prefer to take advantage of what technology has to offer, then you can tap into videos, podcasts, PDFs and webinars to learn more about restaurant management. Restaurant owners can sign up for one of the online workshops about taking their restaurant business online.

Other online sources, such as discussion forums and restaurant blogs, also provide fresh and valuable information into the business. Restaurant owners and managers can also take advantage of their readership, which consists of other restaurateurs and entrepreneurs. Building business relationships in networking events, trade shows and on the Internet can help you grow your restaurant business.
